Miami to Orlando is about 235 miles — far enough that flying looks obviously faster, and close enough that it usually is not. Here is the arithmetic nobody does before booking.
Door to door, flying takes about four hours
The flight is fifty minutes. Around it:
- Getting to MIA and parking or being dropped: 30–60 minutes.
- Recommended arrival before a domestic departure: 2 hours.
- The flight: 50 minutes.
- Deplaning, baggage claim at MCO: 30–45 minutes.
- MCO to a hotel or the parks: 30–45 minutes.
Total: four and a half to five and a half hours, door to door, if nothing goes wrong.
Driving takes about four hours
Three and a half hours up Florida's Turnpike with clear roads; four to four and a half with a stop and normal traffic. Door to door, because it starts at your door and ends at your hotel.
So driving is not slower. It is usually slightly faster, and it is far more predictable — there is no security queue, no gate change and no delayed inbound aircraft.
Where the cost lands
One or two people
Flying usually wins on cost, especially booked ahead. Driving yourself is competitive. A private transfer is a comfort purchase rather than a saving.
A family of four or five
It gets close. Four airline seats plus checked bags, plus getting to and from two airports, often lands near the cost of one vehicle — and the vehicle takes you door to door with no baggage limits.
A group of seven or more
Not close at all. Seven or more airline seats, each with a bag fee, against one Sprinter van at a flat rate is a straightforward win for the van. Above fifteen, a mini coach or a motorcoach is dramatically cheaper per head than flying.
The things that do not show up in a price comparison
- Luggage. No per-bag charges and no weight limits. For a theme-park trip with strollers, car seats and a week of clothes, this is often the deciding factor.
- Children. Four hours in a vehicle with a stop is easier than two airports with a toddler. Most parents who have done both agree.
- Your own schedule. Leave when you want, stop when you want.
- No rental car. No counter queue, no insurance upsell, no returning it, no theme park parking fees.
- Door to door. Straight to your resort entrance rather than to an airport.
When flying is genuinely the right call
One or two people travelling light on a cheap advance fare. A same-day business trip where an hour matters. Or when you are connecting onward from MCO anyway.
When to charter
Four or more passengers, meaningful luggage, or a group. Also worth it when your Orlando destination is a resort rather than the airport — the door-to-door advantage compounds when the last leg would otherwise be another transfer.
