Why the terminal matters more than the port

“Port of Miami” is not a single address. The port is an island connected by one bridge, with nine cruise terminals spread along it, and the drive between the far ends of it takes longer than people expect on a busy morning. Turning up at the wrong terminal with an hour to spare is a genuinely bad way to start a holiday.

Terminal assignments also change. A line that used one terminal last season may be in another this year, and a single line can use different terminals for different ships. We confirm yours against your booking before the day rather than working from last season's pattern — send us the cruise line and sailing date when you book.

Getting onto the port island

Every PortMiami terminal is reached the same way — over the Port Boulevard bridge from downtown. There is one approach, and on a busy morning it is the only thing that determines your journey time. The nine miles from MIA can be fifteen minutes or forty-five depending entirely on how backed up that bridge is, which is why we plan pickups around the port's rhythm rather than around the printed boarding window.

Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale works differently and more easily: multiple approaches, and an airport about two miles away. If you have a choice of where to sail from and you want the simplest possible travel day, that is the one.

The one rule for embarkation day

Arrive inside your assigned boarding window, not before it. Turning up two hours early does not get you aboard sooner; it gets you a longer queue in the Florida heat. The middle of your window is consistently the quietest part of the morning.

Disembarkation runs the other way. Ships release passengers in waves from around 7am, and the terminals empty into the ground transportation areas faster than the taxi rank can absorb. Between roughly 7:30 and 10:00 on a turnaround morning, a pre-booked vehicle is the difference between walking straight out and standing in a queue that does not move.
